The Challenge

When DMI was asked to perform a Health & Safety Gap Analysis for an organization in need, it quickly became clear that the situation was more complex than expected. Rather than minor adjustments, this employer required an entire Health & Safety (H&S) program to be developed from the ground up.

The challenges facing this employer were significant. Employees were regularly exposed to multiple risks, including:

  • Wildlife encounters and the risk of drowning
  • Working alone in remote areas
  • Exposure to environmental elements and contaminants
  • Tasks performed in or near confined spaces.

Without proper procedures for these activities, employees faced the potential for serious injury or even death – and the employer faced major liability and compliance concerns.

The Approach

DMI's Health & Safety Consultant began with an on-site visit to evaluate the environment and understand day-to-day operations. Meeting the client "where they're at" allowed DMI to assess real conditions, talk to staff, and identify hazards that weren't immediately apparent on paper.

One key issue involved an employee who regularly worked alone in the woods at night with limited cell reception. DMI developed a custom Working Alone Procedure tailored to this unique situation. It included clear check-in intervals, an escalation plan for missed check-ins, and reliable communication tools to ensure the worker's safety throughout their shift.

Another critical risk area was confined spaces – a category strictly regulated by WCB due to its high danger level. In Canada, more than 100 deaths occur each year due to confined-space hazards. During the site review, DMI found workers were unaware they were operating in or around confined spaces.

The consultant identified all confined areas, installed proper signage, and implemented safety controls. Ultimately, it was determined that the safest and most cost-effective solution was to hire a specialized company to perform confined-space tasks as needed. This decision eliminated the ongoing costs of equipment maintenance, rescue training, and certification renewals – while ensuring compliance and safety.

The Solution

To establish a strong and sustainable safety foundation. DMI:

  • Developed 38 customized policies and procedures tailored to the organization's operations
  • Delivered employee and supervisor training to clarify responsibilities and proper application of procedures
  • Conducted fit testing for workers using protective equipment
  • Provided a list of required courses from accredited associations to meet WCB compliance

The Impact

The project underscored a key truth: no two organizations are the same. A successful Health & Safety Program requires understanding the unique nature of each business, its people, and its work environment.

Through DMI's expertise, this employer gained:

  • A fully functional, compliant Health & Safety Program
  • Reduced risk of injury, illness, and regulatory penalties
  • Empowered and better-informed staff
  • A stronger, more proactive safety culture

The Takeaway

A comprehensive Health & Safety program isn't just about compliance – it's about protecting people, preventing loss, and promoting a culture of safety.

DMI helps organizations build and sustain effective safety programs that protect workers and strengthen businesses.
