Helping an employee return to work after a disability leave isn’t always straightforward. As an employer, you care about doing the right thing – but sometimes, it’s hard to know where to start. You might be unsure about what an employee can safely do, or how to support them without putting their health at risk.

That’s where the Disability Management Institute (DMI) can help. We offer a range of assessments designed to give you clear, objective information – so you can build a return-to-work plan that works for everyone. Whether you’re supporting someone with physical, cognitive, or ergonomic needs, or assessments provide the insight you need to move forward with confidence.

Here’s a simple breakdown of what’s available:

Physical Demands Analysis (PDA)

Before you match an employee to a role, it helps to fully understand what the job requires. A PDA looks closely at the day-to-day tasks, physical efforts, tolls, and working conditions involved in a specific position. With this information, you’ll know whether the job aligns with what your employee can safely do – or if adjustments are needed.

Functional Abilities Evaluation

This one- or two-day assessment focuses on physical capabilities – like strength, flexibility, coordination, and endurance. It gives you an objective look at what an employee can do, and where they might need support. This is especially helpful when planning a safe return-to-work path or considering alternative roles.

Cognitive Abilities Assessment

If your employee is dealing with mental fatigue, memory issues, or other cognitive challenges, this assessment can help. Led by an Occupational Therapist, it evaluates thinking skills and work-related mental tasks. It also offers practical strategies to boost productivity and match tasks to current abilities -helping both the employee and the team thrive

Ergonomic Assessment

Even when someone is ready to return to work at full capacity, the setup of their workspace can make a big difference. An ergonomic assessment looks at their workstation, tools, and posture to make sure everything supports comfort, safety, and long-term success. Small changes can have a big impact!

Worksite Accommodation Assessment

Sometimes, a role needs to be adjusted to make it work. This assessment happens onsite and looks for any barriers that might be getting in the way. From equipment tweaks to task modifications, we provide solutions that keep the work flowing – and your employees feeling supported.
