May is Disability Insurance Awareness Month, and at DMI, we know disability insurance can be confusing. That’s why we’re cutting through the noise and tackling the most common misconceptions head-on.

Backed by the initiative from LIMRA (Life Insurance Marketing and Research Association), we’re highlighting what disability coverage really looks like – whether it’s short-term, long-term, or something in between. No fluff, just the facts you need to make informed decisions.

Myth 1: Disability Insurance Companies Just Want to Deny Claims

Not true. The purpose of disability insurance is to support people when they need it most – during times of illness or injury. While claim costs are a factor, our goal isn’t to say “no” to those in need. In fact, most people would rather be healthy and working. That’s why we focus on early recovery and fair treatment – it’s better for everyone.

Myth 2: Long-Term Disability Means You’ll Never Work Again

“Long-Term” doesn’t mean forever. These benefits typically kick in after four to six months off work, but they can be approved for short periods too. The goal is to give people the time they need to recover and return to work safely, whether that’s in a few days or a few months.

Myth 3: If You’re on a Worker’s Compensation Claim, You Don’t Need an LTD Claim Too

Actually, you might. While Worker’s Compensation may cover some aspects, applying for Long-Term Disability can still be important. It can trigger things like a Waiver of Premiums, so you’re not paying for group benefits while you’re off work. It also keeps your claim active in case your WCB benefits end but you’re still not able to return to work.

Myth 4: A Doctor’s Note Guarantees Approval

A doctor’s note is important, but it’s just one piece of the puzzle. Most claims require three forms: one from you, one from your employer, and one from your doctor. Everything is reviewed in light of the actual policy – not just the diagnosis, but your treatment plan, and the impact your symptoms have on your ability to function.

Myth 5: Mental Health isn’t Covered

It absolutely is. Mental health conditions are not only covered, but they’re also actually one of the top reasons for Long-Term Disability claims today. Whether it’s physical or psychological, support is there when you need it.

Myth 6: Trying to Work During the Waiting Period Could Hurt Your Claim

Disability insurance is here to support recovery efforts – not punish them. If you feel well enough to give work a try, go for it. Being proactive is a good thing.
