Mental health conditions, persistent pain, and other complex health conditions can present unique challenges during recovery. They can arise from a variety of circumstances, including workplace injuries, physically demanding work, chronic health conditions, or traumatic events. These conditions can affect an individual's ability to carry out daily activities and return to work, making personalized support an important part of the recovery process.

DMI's Specialty Services Programs provide evidence-based support to help participants rebuild confidence, improve functional capacity, and work toward a safe return to work when appropriate.

A Personalized Approach to Recovery

Every participant's recovery journey is different. That's why programs need to be tailored to each individual's goals, needs, and circumstances. Participants meet weekly in virtual, goal-directed sessions with a trained Reactivation Consultant. Together, they establish realistic goals that guide the program and are adjusted as recovery progresses to reflect changing needs.

Using an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) approach, participants learn strategies that help them improve function and continue making progress, even when symptoms are still present. To help measure progress, participants complete a Work Readiness Self-Efficacy Questionnaire at the beginning and end of the program.

Mental Health and Persistent Pain Programs: Different Ways to Support Recovery

While both programs share the same goal of improving function and supporting recovery, the Persistent Pain Program includes additional tools to help participants better manage ongoing pain.

Participants learn practical strategies, including:

  • Pain Inflexion Point
  • Defusion (detaching from negative or recuring thoughts or from physical pain sensations)
  • Relapse prevention strategies
  • Lifestyle changes that align with their individual goals and values

These tools are designed to help participants reduce the impact of persistent pain while supporting meaningful progress in their daily lives.

Supporting Meaningful Recovery

DMI's Specialty Services Programs are designed to help participants re-engage in meaningful daily activities while improving their confidence in returning to work. Many participants report that the skills and strategies they develop during the program continue to benefit them beyond their recovery, helping them navigate everyday life with greater confidence.
