Mental health conditions represent the most common category of Long-Term Disability (LTD) claims in Canada and account for a disproportionate share of overall disability costs. These claims are often highly complex, influenced by multiple clinical, social, and workplace factors that affect treatment response and recovery. As a result, successful outcomes depend on timely, highly customized, and proactive intervention strategies.
Unfortunately, access to appropriate mental health care remains a significant challenge. In many provinces, individuals referred to a psychiatrist face average wait times of 12 months or longer. During this period, symptoms may worsen and functional capacity may decline, meaning that by the time care is accessed, recovery is often more prolonged and complicated. These systemic delays can directly impact claim duration, employee well–being, and return to work outcomes.
Expedited Psychiatric Access Through Azura Health
To help address these barriers, Disability Management Institute (DMI) is partnering with Azura Health, a Canadian organization that provides expedited access to psychiatric assessments for employees on disability leave. By leveraging virtual care, Azura is able to support employees nationwide, regardless of geography.
Following referral, the average time for an appointment is fewer than three business days, with many assessments occurring within 24 hours. Azura's psychiatrists provide diagnostic clarity, along with evidence-based recommendations for treatment and ongoing support aimed at improving functional capacity and return to work readiness. Assessment reports are shared directly with the employee's family physician, ensuring continuity of care and supporting the effective implementation and monitoring of treatment recommendations.
Mental Health Recovery in Motion
Since initiating work with Azura, DMI has observed meaningful benefits for employees navigating complex mental health claims.
In one case, an employee approved for LTD had experienced limited progress due to a lack of coordinated, proactive care. Symptoms of their mental health condition, compounded by fear and stigma, led to social isolation and inconsistent follow-up with their physician. While medication had been prescribed, the employee had gone through options without finding an effective fit. Counselling had been recommended, but cost concerns and the perceived burden of initiating treatment created additional barriers.
Following referral to Azura, the employee was booked for a psychiatric assessment within the same week. The psychiatrist confirmed the existing diagnoses identified by the family physician, while also identifying additional psychiatric and physical health factors affecting recovery, including a substance use concern.
A comprehensive treatment plan was developed, including medication adjustments tailored to the employee's full diagnostic profile, a structured Cognitive Behavioral Therapy program, light therapy, and targeted behavioral interventions such as regular exercise, improved sleep routines, and increased social engagement. The psychiatrist worked collaboratively with the family physician to implement medication changes, and once the assessment report was shared with DMI, a structured reactivation program was put in place to support the remaining treatment recommendations.
The employee is now actively engaged in their recovery plan and making steady progress, with a goal of program completion and return to work within the next four months.
Driving Better Outcomes Through Strategic Partnerships
This case illustrates the power of timely access to specialized mental health care combined with coordinated disability management. By working closely with organizations like Azura Health, DMI is able to remove critical barriers to care, accelerate diagnostic clarity, and translate clinical recommendations into actionable recovery plans. These partnerships enable earlier intervention, improved functional outcomes, and more sustainable return-to-work trajectories, benefiting employees, employers, and insurers alike. As mental health claims continue to drive disability trends across Canada, DMI remains committed to innovative collaborations that deliver measurable results and meaningful recovery.
